Fresh Air 03:23
FRESH AIR Stuck inside these walls Let me go I’m not afraid to fall So take me there Climbing up into the cool, fresh air The day is here to seize Open up the door and feel the breeze Extraordinaire A deep breath of sweet, fresh air There’ll be lessons learned And some bridges burned But the world will turn And greet the new dawn Don’t know what’s in store Try my wings and see if I can soar There’s room to spare At the top with all the clear, fresh air

START OF A BEAUTIFUL SONG There’s a tone shimmering in the air Catching me unaware The start of a beautiful song Been here before, but the melody always fades Maybe this time it’s not too late For the start of a beautiful song I could hear it first in the distance But I would not believe my ears Then one night I knew in an instant When you came near This is real, a crescendo that’s growing strong This is where we belong At the start of a beautiful song

FEELIN’ THE FLAME Sometimes you’re hot, sometimes you’re cold But I’ve got a blaze that keeps burning and you’re to blame I’m feelin’ the flame Am I turning you on or turning you off Does my touch make you tingle or am I way off my aim Are you feelin’ the flame? You’re sending out signals in some kind of code I’m trying to translate them into hope Maybe I’m corny, maybe you’re cool But if you can’t come close to this fire then that’s a shame ‘Cause I’m feelin’ the flame

DANGEROUS MIND Walk along, sky is clear, no fear, it’s a new day Hit a bump, serenity just flew away The birds of worry chatter on the line And nest inside my dangerous mind Close my eyes, awaken to what’s true, reality Take a breath and smile at the simplicity In the moment everything is fine If I stay away from my dangerous mind ‘Cause that voice will whisper I’m bound to lose And hang me up in a future full of blues Till I come back to the here and now And rest inside a place beyond the clouds Here I am, feet firmly on the ground Pausing to experience the sights, the smells, the sounds Alive and grateful to find Peace with my dangerous, my dangerous, my dangerous mind

In the Dark 04:36
IN THE DARK In the dark I can feel your body move Lying awake in the after taste of you Sweet but bitter too There’s a blue note bending low And an empty pillow when you go The scene unfolds in the dark How many times will it take before I learn Playing with fire fascinates until it burns And I wind up here again Counting up my should have beens Alone with a question mark In the dark

about

After several years of performing together on occasion, guitarist VINCE LEWIS and singer/guitarist BARBARA MARTIN have finally made it into a recording studio, and the result is the delightful Fresh Air (Vinbara Music 107). They mix some original material with classics from the Great American Songbook, and add in as an opener Wes Montgomery s West Coast Blues. Lewis has come onto my radar during the last few years, and his nimble guitar artistry continues to impress. Martin is a singer who effectively combines her natural feel for lyric interpretation with passionate vocalizing, resulting is convincing readings of each selection. She also happens to be an interesting lyricist, whether setting words to her own melodies or those of Lewis. This is a very personal recording that has the effect of making the listener feel that the musicians have directed their efforts directly to him or her. --Jersey Jazz

about

Barbara Martin Waynesboro, Virginia

Jazz and blues singer-songwriter Barbara Martin is the real deal; a true renaissance woman in a genre prone to stereotypes and pigeon-holes. Barbara’s soulful voice and skillful songwriting combined with the ability to transition from chanteuse to girl-next-door to perceptive poet make her delightfully her own woman. ... more
